Customs House will be ceded to the Cape Town International Convention Centre
6 March 2008
The Minister of Public Works, Ms Thoko Didiza has revealed that the state is agreeable to contributing in principle Customs House for the expansion of the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
At a meeting convened in parliament today, the Minister informed a meeting attended by the Premier of the Western Cape, Mr Ebrahim Rasool and the Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works and Transport, Mr Marius Fransman as well as Convenco (the company that is managing the convention centre) that the decision is based on the state's conviction that the operation of a successful Convention Centre is in the best interests of the country, the province and the city.
The state, in communicating its agreement in principle to contribute customs house, articulated the basis on which it would be willing to do so. The parties were in general agreement on the conceptual issues involved. It was, however, agreed that it is necessary to consider in detail the relevant conceptual and technical issues to implement the proposal.
A technical team is being constituted to deal with all relevant conceptual and technical issues. It will report to the principals as soon as it has finalised its work.
