29 February 2008
The Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, Mrs Lindiwe Hendricks, has today announced that Ms Pam Yako has been appointed Director-General of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry with effect from 1 March 2008. This appointment follows the approval granted by the President for the deployment of Ms Yako from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism to Water Affairs and Forestry.
Pam Yako comes to the department with a proven track record in leadership and management. She has a BComm, a post graduate Diploma in Labour Law, a certificate in Human Resources Management, a certificate in Provincial and Local Government Law and a Masters in Business Leadership and has been Director-General of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism since April 2005.
She started out as a gender field worker for the Border Rural Committee, a rural development non-governmental organisation based in East London. In July 1997, she became Chief Executive Officer of the Amatola District Council, a position she held until the change in the local government dispensation. She served as Municipal Manager of the Amatola District Municipality in 2001, and joined the Department of Environment Affairs and Tourism in January 2002 as Deputy Director General in Biodiversity and Conservation. She was later appointed as Chief Operating Officer of the department in October 2003.
In making the announcement, Minister Hendricks expressed her excitement at the appointment of Ms Pam Yako and welcomed her to the department and added that Ms Yako joins the department at a very critical time in terms of meeting the service delivery targets and the need for the department to clean up its act with regard to financial management.
