Prompt action by Correctional Services curbed an escape at the Losperfontein Correctional Centre in Brits

Prompt action by members of Correctional Service and South African Police Service demonstrated vigilance and alertness in preventing an escape by two awaiting trial detainees from the Losperfontein Correctional Centre in Brits today, 28 December 2007.
The incident took place in the early hours of this morning at approximately 04h00 when two awaiting trial detainees allegedly broke out through the correctional facility where after an alarm was raised by correctional service staff on duty. Members of the South African Police Service around the area were immediately summoned and through their prompt response and action, a manhunt went underway.
The search was very difficult to conduct due to rain and also that Losperfontein Correctional Centre is situated within a bushveld area, however, the detainees were recaptured at approximately 07h00 this morning.
The Department of Correctional Service further wishes to commend the efforts and support by members of the public around Losperfontein Correctional Centre who for their part during the search showed that public confidence in the criminal justice system will be strengthened and improved.
Further details of the case will only be published when investigations have been concluded.
