South African Police Service resumes with festive season Liquor Act compliance operations

The South African Police Service (SAPS) today embarked on the first of a series of nationwide festive season operations with specific focus on non-compliance with the Liquor Act 2 of 2003; Regulation 918 of the Health Act, 1997 and the Fire brigade Act 99 of 1998. The operation will end on 20 January 2008.
Our main aim and objective is to ensure that all liquor outlets comply with the above-mentioned Acts. All liquor licence holders and the community at large are reminded of the following applicable Liquor Act provisions:
Tavern/night club/pub (on-site consumption)
* Operating times: 10h00 to 02h00 (Seven days a week)
* Patrons are not allowed to leave with alcohol beverages and can only consume it inside.
Bottle stores (off-site consumption)
* Operating times: 08h00 to 20h00 (Mondays to Saturdays) and 09h00 to 15h00 (Sundays)
* Patrons are not allowed to drink inside the premises.
Liquor outlet owners who contravene the above-mentioned provisions of the Liquor Act, will be arrested, prosecuted and convicted in a court of law. Penalties include, among others, revocation of licences, fines and a possible prison sentence. These premises should not be seen to be havens for criminal activity and unlawfulness. Recent docket analysis with regard to certain serious and violent contact crimes indicates that misuse and abuse of liquor is one the social generators of crime.
