"Bring the award to the North West province; we have faith in you;" says Acting MEC Darkie Africa
28 August 2007
The North West Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment is pinning its hopes on four women to bring the award home, when they will be representing the province at the national Female Farmer of the Year Awards to be held at the Emnotweni Arena, Nelspruit in Mpumalanga on Friday, 31 August 2007.
The four agricultural projects; Sunnyview Grapes -top producer for export market, Moeniemounie Boerdery - top producer for national markets, Seleke Vegetables - top producer for informal markets, and Nkagisang Farming Enterprise - top producer for household markets were all rewarded and declared winners in their respective categories during this year's provincial award ceremony that was held early this month. They will now be vying for the national honours, against other projects from other provinces.
"Given the high standards these women have set and considering the quality of their projects, I believe they are destined to not disappoint us. They will make their mark as it has been the case in the past years. We are optimistic that they will bring the top honour to the North West Province", said Acting MEC for the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, Darkie Africa.
The competition, which is in its ninth year, is intended to empower women in agriculture by recognising their contributions in the agricultural sector. The competition is also aimed at highlighting the need to promote agriculture, particularly food security and advance employment creation and women development.
The National Minister for the Department of Agriculture and Land Affairs, Ms Lulu Xingwana will announce national winners at a ceremony to be held in Mpumalanga on Friday, 31 August 2007.
"The Department is behind them and we wish them well in their effort to put the province on the national map once again", said Africa
