North West Youth Commemorate 1976 Uprisings

14 June 2007

Mafikeng: The North West Provincial Youth Commission is expecting a huge turnout at the Youth Day Commemoration to be held on Saturday, 16 June 2007, at 10h00 in Disaneng Sports Ground.

The rally, that will be commemorated under the theme "Renewing our pledge: Deepening youth participation in development through service" is anticipated to attract approximately 15 000 young people from all over the province.

Premier Ednah Molewa is expected to address the youth where she will call for the participation of all role players to address the plight of youth.

"We need to inculcate an understanding of the role of youth in the promotion of civic awareness and national reconstruction. We also must redirect the energies of youth in the province from non-constructive to constructive activities while correcting negative attitudes towards youth," said Premier Molewa.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the North West Provincial Youth Commission Kabelo Mataboge said a number of programmes have been identified for youth development in various sectors of the province.

The North West Province Youth Commission has identified programmes in pursuit of youth development. Among these will be the focus on young people's values since there is an outcry that young people do not respect tradition, elders as well as other forms of social values.

This extends to correcting the imbalances to restore the respect of culture, value and tradition through the moral regeneration programme. A seminar will be held in the province from 27 to 30 June 2007.

In the field of learning the Youth Commission plans to encourage the return of winter schools for grades 10 to 12, focusing on the areas of engineering, science and technology.

The Chairperson Kabelo Mataboge intimated that young people should fully understand that 16 June marks an important facet of "our lives in the new democracy era. We will not be celebrating this day, but congregating to commit as a collective and further outlining our implementation strategy of continuing and possibly completing what young people started in 1976 and beyond."

Mataboge further requested young people to come in great numbers to receive messages of support from the Premier, Executive Mayor of Central District Municipality and other dignitaries who will be in attendance.

For entertainment the crowd will dance to Kelly Khumalo, Tuks, Morafe, Mzet, Winnie Mashaba and other local artists' music.

People from various municipalities will be bussed at no cost to the venue. Those who wish to attend are urged to contact the offices of their Mayors and Municipal Managers for further information.
