Minister Pandor to pay surprise visits; launch "Drop-all-and Read" campaign and hand over computers to schools in Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (17 - 18 January 2007)

The Minister of Education, Mrs Naledi Pandor, accompanied by the senior departmental officials, will on Wednesday and Thursday, 17 and 18 January 2007, visit schools in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, respectively.
The purpose of the Minister's visit is to assess the state of readiness of the schools during their first day of the official reopening for 2007.
The official opening of the schools in the Coastal Provinces is Wednesday, 17 January 2007.
The Minister's itinerary is as follows:
17 January 2007 – Port Elizabeth - Eastern Cape Province
08h00: Minister pays surprise visits to schools in Port Elizabeth. (Journalists to gather at the Protea Hotel-Marine at 07h00)
09h30: Minister launches the Drop-all-and-Read Campaign at BJ Mnyanda Public Primary School, Njoli Road at KwaZakhele in Port Elizabeth.
11h30: Minister hands over 20 fully installed computers to Douglas Mbopha Motherwell High School, 1 Matanzima Street in Motherwell.
The Drop-All-And-Read is a national campaign created to promote the importance and value of reading in schools and beyond. The campaign will be used to provide new Grade R and Grade 1 learners with the "Minister's reading gift" during their first year in school and also encourage schools to set time aside for learners, teachers and school management to "drop all and read."
The launch of the Drop all and Read Campaign intends to highlight the Department of Education's commitment in promoting the culture of reading in schools. The campaign is planned for 5 years. During the launch the Minister will hand over the reading promotional materials to Grade R and Grade 1 learners as follows:
18 January 2007 – KwaZulu-Natal Province
07h50 – 10h30: Minister pays surprise visits to schools in the Northern part of KwaZulu-Natal. (Journalists to gather at Sibaya Lodge, 1 Sibaya Road, Umhlanga, Durban at 07h00)
12h00 – Minister visits Somashi High School at Umsinga, Tugela Ferry and hands over 20 fully installed computers.
