Mr Yengeni's placement under correctional supervision and parole, Cape Town

14 January 2007

The Minister of Correctional Services today briefed Mr Yengeni and his family about the regulations of his placement under correctional supervision which effectively commence tomorrow.

Mr Yengeni is tomorrow, Monday, 15 January 2007, being relocated from Malmesbury Correctional Centre and placed under correctional supervision. This is a continuation of sentence outside correctional service custody and places the offender effectively under house arrest within the confines of very strict regulations. An offender placed under such regulations has to strictly adhere to them at all times.

Mr Yengeni will serve his sentence under correctional supervision until his release in January 2008. He will only be able to live a normal life without any restriction after this period.

Mr Yengeni's parole conditions are explicitly stipulated under correctional supervision and parole conditions which are accessible at (http://www.dcs.gov.za).

Conditions under which an offender is placed on correctional supervision are one of the hardest in terms of correctional services regulations, which effectively mean that the offender will not be subjected to a life of a normal citizen.

As the political head of the department who is the most senior accountable leader of Department of Correctional Services, Minister Ngconde Balfour had to personally read the "riot act" to Mr Yengeni to ensure that he is fully informed of the rules and obligations of placement under correctional supervision.

The Minister has a responsibility to ensure that he takes full responsibility for any action that has to be taken whilst an offender of Mr Yengeni's nature is serving correctional supervision.

This has to be done to protect the department's reputation and integrity as the buck finally stops with the Minister for any matters related to correctional services.
