Deputy President, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, to visit the Chris Hani district, Eastern Cape province, as part of the Presidential Imbizo

9 October 2006

Deputy President, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and the Premier of the Eastern Cape, Nosimo Balindlela, will visit the Chris Hani District Municipality as part of the country-wide Presidential Imbizo programme intended to strengthen municipal capacity to deliver on their mandate. The Imbizo will mainly take place in Queenstown and Engcobo over the two days, Friday, 13 and Saturday, 14 October 2006.

This drive is part of a number of initiatives within Government's Programme of Action, to support local government in delivering on among others, the Integrated Development Plans (IDP) and Local Economic Development (LED). The Deputy President and the leadership will also visit various local municipalities with a view to interact with Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA) related projects as well as with communities.

The Imbizo will directly seek to engage communities and stakeholders in the implementation of Project Consolidate, as a practical, appropriate and national programme to deal with challenges some of which will be raised during the interactive sessions with councillors, municipal officials and communities.
