Launch of the 50th anniversary of the women’s march to the Union Building

Following Cabinet’s decision to mark major anniversaries in the history of the struggle towards democracy, government will on 8 March launch the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s Anti-Pass March to the Union Buildings. The launch will coincide with the commemoration of the International Women’s Day.
The historic women’s march anniversary forms part of the broader anniversaries to be commemorated through the year. These include the centenary of the Bambatha Rebellion, 30th anniversary of the Soweto Uprisings, Centenary of the Satyagraha (Mahatma Ghandi’s Passive Resistance Movement), 10th anniversary of the adoption of the constitution, 60th anniversary of the great mine workers strike, 20th commemoration of the Samora Machel plane crash as well as the 50th anniversary of the Treason Trial.
The launch will take the form of a breakfast briefing at the Mount Nelson Hotel in the Cape Town, 8 March 2006 at 8:00am. The Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Z Pallo Jordan will brief the media on the anniversaries.
