ICASA launches the invitation to apply for commercial satellite and cable subscription broadcasting services

Johannesburg - On 31 January 2006, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) will launch its Invitation to Apply (“the ITA”) for commercial satellite and cable subscription broadcasting services.

Subscription broadcasting refers to ‘pay broadcasting’ available to subscribers only. ICASA published the Position Paper on subscription broadcasting on 1 June 2005. The Position Paper sets out ICASA’s policy on, amongst others:
* The regulatory framework for subscription broadcasting in South Africa; and
* The policy and licensing framework for subscription broadcasting

ICASA is now ready to invite applicants to apply for commercial satellite and cable subscription broadcasting services. Applications for terrestrial subscription broadcasting services will not be considered until the national strategy on the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting has been finalised.
