MEC Yawa to announce financial assistance for a facially disfigured and impoverished Setlagole girl

19 January 2006

North West MEC for Public Works, Mr Howard Yawa, will tomorrow announce financial assistance for an impoverished and facially disfigured 11 year-old Setlagole girl. The announcement will be made during the 2005/06 Department of Public Works' inaugural MEC's Excellence Awards Ceremony to be held at Barolong Boo-Ratshidi Community Hall, in Montshioastadt near Mafikeng.

Mosetsana Setai sustained serious burns to her face in a shack fire when she was three months old. She was left badly disfigured in an accident caused by a candle and is currently shying away from members of her community. The girl was so badly injured she could no longer close her lips, which leaves her unable to stop the saliva coming from her mouth.

The sponsorship will amongst others provide for her surgical facial reconstruction, medical expenses and other necessities like food and clothes. In addition, a trust will be established in her name to raise funds and ensure that she is able to attend school and socialise with other children and eventually be integrated into society, which she does not do at this stage.

The MEC's Excellence Awards Ceremony starts at 18:00.
