South Africa to donate funds to victims of Hurricane Katrina
8 January 2006
Tshwane – In a gesture of solidarity and support, the South African government will be donating an amount of R2 million to victims of Hurricane Katrina at a function at Howard University, Washington, United States of America (USA), scheduled for Wednesday, 11 January 2006.
The donation will be made by South African Foreign Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma in a function organised by the Howard University in honour of the victims of the hurricane, which devastated a number of coastal cities in the USA last year.
Following the devastation of the hurricane, Howard University has instituted a programme to assist students through which each student will be awarded US$1 000.
The University has, in addition, begun admitting students from the affected regions of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi Counties through a streamlined enrolment process.
Minister Dlamini Zuma will depart from South Africa on Sunday, 8 January 2006, for Washington.
