Gender Commission response - Rape allegations against the Deputy President of the African National Congress (ANC)

21 November 2005

Recent reports alleging that the Deputy President of the ANC, Mr Jacob Zuma, raped a woman are a matter of great concern to the Commission on Gender Equality (CGE). We also wish to state our disquiet with the manner in which some newspapers had reported on these allegations, particularly naming the victim of abuse is a serious violation of her human rights and dignity.

This kind of conduct is highly insensitive and proves once more the lack of comprehension of gender issues by the media.

As we are finalising preparations for the annual "16 Days of Activism Campaign" we are aggrieved that such allegations emerge at this time against a leader who enjoys much respect in our community. Violence against women is a crime against women as human beings; consequently, it is our view that acts of violence against women should never be tolerated at all. It is even more concerning to us that the woman at the centre of this saga is alleged to be in protective custody for fear that the community may turn against her for reporting the incidence.

We do not seek to presume Mr Zuma guilty, but we cannot keep quiet when there are allegations of violence against women. Thus we are of the view that it is crucial that we all allow law agencies to carry out their responsibilities around this matter and be seen to be doing so speedily for all concerned.

For our part as the CGE, we offer our solidarity with the victim and many other women who are in similar circumstances. We hope the time will come where those who find themselves in similar situations will report to the police without any fear that communities may turn against them but rather will receive support and solidarity.

We call on the police and the whole criminal justice system to finalise this matter speedily so that speculation on this issue in the media can seize.

If there has been any wrong doing from any party then the law must take its cause.
