Post Office makes important drug bust
20 October 2005
Customs and Excise inspectors working at Durmail International Services (South African Post Office) yesterday discovered a consignment of cocaine and ecstasy tablets sent in an airmail parcel from the Netherlands. The items were hidden in a microwave oven addressed to a resident in Durban.
The Organised Crime Unit of the South African Police Service are investigating and estimate the street value of the drugs at R250 000. Members of the Customs and Excise anti-smuggling unit are assisting with investigations.
The Post Office has a no-tolerance approach to any form of postal crime. With a special division dedicated to eradicating crime, the incidence of crime has dropped consistently for the past three years. Members of the public who wish to report any postal crime or a suspicion of postal crime, can call the toll-free Crime-buster Hotline at 0800 033 554. All reports are investigated.
