President Thabo Mbeki to conduct a review on progress made with the Hewlett Packard (HP) project in bridging the digital divide in rural areas
19 October 2005
President Thabo Mbeki will on Friday, 21 October 2005, visit the Dipichi Village in the Limpopo Province to conduct the third Presidential review of the Mogalakwena HP i-community project, which the President himself launched in 2002.
The aim of the HP i-community project, which directly addresses socio-economic challenges in a rural community setting, is to improve prospects of a better life for those living in the least developed and under-resourced villages in Mogalakwena, by providing them with information and communications technology (ICT) facilities and telecoms infrastructure.
This hitherto successful initiative came into being after HP had donated to the Mogalakwena Municipality some of the information technology material used during the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) hosted by South Africa in September 2002.
