Charity organisations benefit from World Food celebrations
14 October 2005
Different Northern Cape based charity organisations and orphanage homes will benefit from the World Food Day celebrations to be held on Sunday, 16 October, in Kimberley at the Northern Cape Legislature.
Over 20 organisations have pledged their support to donate food to be distributed to needy communities and organisations.
A call has been made for people to donate food in an effort to fight hunger in celebrating the United Nations (UN) backed World Food Day. All provinces will be celebrating the event.
The global theme for this year’s event is “Agriculture and Intercultural Dialogue” aimed at recalling contributions of different cultures to agriculture.
Proceedings of the day will start at 07h00 with the formation of a human chain as a form of declaration to unite people against food insecurity. Participants will then march to show solidarity for a common cause against hunger. The march will end at the legislature for the final construction of the food mountain.
The food collected will be distributed among charities and needy organisations within Northern Cape.
The event will be attended by among others the Deputy Minister for Social Development, Dr Jean Benjamin, and Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Land Affairs, Adv Dirk du Toit.
