Public Works, Roads and Transport to launch Transport Month

28 September 2005

The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Mr Seiso Mohai will be launching the Public Transport Month (PTM) campaign in Villiers at the Qalabotjha Community Hall on Friday, 30 September 2005. The event will start at 10:00am.

As the month of October has been declared Public Transport Month (PTM) nationally, the drive among others seeks to emphasise the necessity to champion the speedy transformation of public transport services in the province and beyond. During this period the Department will also among others highlight the shortcomings and challenges the public transport sector is facing with particular emphasis on the lack of public transport infrastructure and the frequent services most rural areas of our province and the country face.

The main activities for the campaign include the highlighting of the inter-modal facility and the issuing of the first operator’s licenses to taxi operators. The operator’s license’ event falls under the guideline of the Taxi Recapitalisation Programme, and will take place on 13 October 2005 (see attached activity plan). Other main activities of main interest include the Car Free Day scheduled for 20 October 2005 and the Bicycle Day on 24 October 2005.

On the Car Free Day members of the public will be encouraged to use public transport instead of using private vehicles. All these three events will take place in Bloemfontein.

The Department would like to invite members of the public and the media to take part during the launch of Public Transport Month.
