The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport in the Free State, Mr Seiso Mohai, has convened a meeting with the representatives of the taxi industry on Sunday, 4 September 2005, at 10h00 in the Civic Theatre (Pacofs), Bloemfontein.

The purpose of this meeting is to brief, discuss with and prepare the taxi operators for the Taxi Recapitalisation Programme (TRP),which is to officially commence this November (2005). About 700 taxi operators, representing the majority of the 9122 taxi operators will participate in this meeting.

The overall goal of the TRP is the replacement of the current ageing fleet that constitutes the bulk of the taxi industry with new vehicles that are safe and reliable. The programme will also bring about sustainability of the industry as a business, as well as ensure its formalisation and effective regulation.

National Government has put aside R7.7 billion for the recapitalisation Programme. R2.5 billion is specifically provided for law enforcement. The Free State is among the provinces that will feature in the initial phase of the TRP to be kick-started in November 2005.

All media are therefore invited to this meeting.
