Message of condolences from the acting Premier of Limpopo, Joyce Mashamba, on the passing on of her Majesty the Queen of Bolobedu, Makobo Mogjadji

13 June 2005

“A dark cloud has befallen the people of Limpopo and indeed of the continent of Africa. It is with deep sorrow and sadness to learn that the Rain Queen of the Balobedu is no more. As a government and people of Limpopo we wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Modjadji Royal family and the Balobedu people for the blow they have suffered. Their loss is ours too”, said acting Premier Mashamba.

“The people of Limpopo pride themselves with the Modjadji dynasty which has always remained the only Royal House in Africa where a woman reigns supreme as a Queen, with supernatural powers capable of making rain. The sacredness of the Modjadji Kingdom and the humility of Her Majesty stand as distinguishing features of Limpopo on the world tourism map. Her Majesty the Queen was a symbol of hope and unity throughout the Province and our country,” Mashamba added.

“We particularly feel indebted to the role she played as a traditional leader in maintaining the integrity of the institution of traditional leadership in our Province and the entire country through her dedicated service to the Balobedu people. We feel honoured that Her Majesty left behind a rich and distinctive legacy of customs and language which our people pride themselves with throughout South Africa”, Acting Premier concluded.

May Her Soul rest in peace
