Statement by MEC Kagisho David Molusi on Soccer Indaba

2 June 2005

The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the SAFA Griqualand West and Northern Cape West, are hosting the Northern Cape Soccer Indaba, which will take place on 10 and 11 June, in Kimberley at the Tabernacle. The Soccer Indaba boasts dignitaries like the CEO of the FIFA 2010 World Cup LOC Mr Danny Jordan, the Deputy President of SAFA Professor L Gadinabokao, the Chairperson of Women’s Soccer Ria Ledwaba, Dr Ali Bacher and the CEO of JOHNCOM Mr Connie Molusi. Premier of the Province Ms Dipuo Peters will deliver the keynote address and I will close the Indaba and pave the way forward.

Members of the Executive Council and Members of the Provincial Legislature are also expected at the Soccer Indaba, as well as several sports representatives from all over the country.

One of our key priorities for having the Soccer Indaba is to equip ourselves better as a province, in line with the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The Soccer Indaba will look into developing a comprehensive strategy towards soccer in the province, with the following objectives:

* To draft a Provincial Strategy towards 2010;
* To look at the development of soccer in the province;
* To investigate a strategy to attain and sustain a professional soccer team in the province;
* To get Public Private Partnership buy-in in the whole process;
* To place soccer development and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in the ambit of the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy; and
* To raise the profile of soccer in the Province.

During the Soccer Indaba, we will also be looking into the establishment of a professional soccer team.

The FIFA 2010 World Cup is going to be the greatest sporting event ever staged on the African Continent. The Soccer Indaba will assist in gearing ourselves towards rigorous preparations to ensure the necessary requirements are adhered to for the hosting of matches in the Northern Cape.

Representatives of sports organisations, especially in the rural areas of the province, who wish to register for the Soccer Indaba may contact the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture at (053) 831 4152, before Monday, 6 June 2005, at 16h00.
