SA Waste Management Company to get final warning from MEC Mosunkutu
23 May 2005
Gauteng Agriculture, Conservation and Environment MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu will tomorrow (Tuesday, 24 May 2005) revisit the SA Waste Management Company to issue a final warning to management for operating an illegal waste site in Alexandra.
During his first visit, MEC Mosunkutu delivered a notice to the management of SA Waste Management warning them of possible closure of the site if they could not bring reasonable motivation against such closure within two working days.
Accompanied by officials from the national Environmental Affairs and Tourism Department, MEC Mosunkutu paid a surprise visit to the site on 12 May 2005 to discuss the health risks posed by the illegal dumping site with the surrounding communities and to hear their views on the closure thereof.
Subsequent to the site inspection, the company duly submitted their presentation on why more stringent measures should not be taken against their operations. The MEC has made it clear that his response will be informed by the wellbeing of the community of Alexandra and the seriousness of environmental degradation caused by operations of this company.
