Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, visits the Unizul Science Centre and the University of Fort Hare

11 May 2005

On 12 and 13 May the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will visit the University of Zululand Science Centre as well as the Gate Way Science Centre in Umhlanga Rocks and the University of Fort Hare respectively, for the last two days of the National Science Week (NSW), which was launched on 5 May by Minister Mangena in Mokopane, Limpopo.

The Deputy Minister will join scores of learners who will be indulging in and experimenting with science activities to prepare themselves for future careers as well as gaining a better understanding of the science and technology world.

Activities at the Gate Way Science Centre in Umhlanga Rocks will start at 9h00 in the morning on 12 May while those at Unizul Science Centre will start at 11h40. He will briefly address learners at all the venues.

The next and last day of the NSW will be held at the University of Fort Hare starting at 10h20 in the morning, where 24 learners will be presented with prizes and certificates for their participation in science activities for the day.

They will also be issued with a coffee table book detailing Progress and Achievements in the First Decade of Freedom in the field of science and technology to use it in their school libraries as reference material.

All these science activities will be conducted under the theme “Tomorrow’s Science and Technology is in our Youth’s hands”. We remain confident that when we take stock of the success or otherwise of the NSW, it will reveal a steady rise in the interest and understanding of science and technology on the part of our school going youth and the community at large as well as challenges that must be overcome to make science and technology more accessible to them.

Deputy Minister Hanekom’s conclusion of the last leg of the National Science Week in these two Provinces is meant to ensure the establishment of enduring partnerships for economic growth and development as well as fostering the unity of all our people in building a South Africa that truly belongs to all.
