MEC Cachalia to interact with Diepsloot residents

12 April 2005

Gauteng Community Safety MEC, Firoz Cachalia, will interact with residents of Diepsloot in Gauteng as part of the Provincial Government’s Izimbizo tomorrow, 13 April 2005. The aim of these Izimbizo is to have a dialogue with communities in Gauteng regarding government’s development agenda and to raise awareness about government’s services.

Diepsloot is a rapidly growing township in the North of Johannesburg which started as an informal settlement in 1996. In the past nine years the area has expanded into 11 solid extensions (sections). The area has an estimated population of more than 500 000 people. During its nine years of existence, Diepsloot has had remarkable development including schools, clinics, taxi ranks, youth centre, Johannesburg Metropolitan Offices, electricity supply and sanitation. However certain sections still need some attention. The Imbizo will be used to deal with those areas and to discuss plans around those areas. The MEC will also launch a Community Policing Forum for the area. The program for tomorrow includes the following:

* Meeting with Educators and Learner Representative Council at Itireleng High School
* Launch of CPF at Muzomuhle Primary School
* Public Meeting at Muzomuhle Primary School
