Molewa promises the eradication of bucket system in Mamusa

11 April 2005

“We will fight day and night until the bucket system in this area is eradicated. Our government is on course in line with the President’s call prioritising the eradication of the bucket system.”

This was said by the Premier of North West, Edna Molewa, during the Imbizo focus week in Mamusa yesterday (Sunday, 10 April 2005). She was responding to many complaints raised about the use of buckets system whilst other communities have moved on to using flush toilets.

The Premier was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Lindiwe Hendricks, as well as Members of the Executive Council during the Imbizo.

Premier Molewa also cautioned and instructed that action be taken against the local tavern called ‘Takalani Sesame’ which is alleged to allow and sell alcohol to minors.

“Liqour licences have clear conditions and if it is found that the owner acts contrary to the licence, serious action will be taken”. She added that the community must assist and ensure children are protected and are given good morals to develop into good citizens.

Whilst the Deputy Minister acknowledged problems existed in these communities, she praised various departments and municipalities for making efforts at addressing issues related to pensions and social grants.

“It gives courage to see that issues relating to social grants and pensions are being addressed as little information about them were raised.” She said.

MEC Maureen Modiselle has also given the Commissioner of SAPS until 13 April 2005 to bring the case of traffic officer Mr Jeremia ‘Oupakie’ Maruping of Ipelegeng outside Schweizer Reneke to court. Mr Maruping was on 22 December 2003 apparently hit by a 4x4 vehicle while on duty and the driver fled the scene of the accident. He is now paralysed and the case has never been heard in court.

“By the end of business tomorrow Commissioner Beetha must have finalised the case to be registered with the court of law, Justice has to be done in this case.” said MEC Modiselle.

Various other complaints and compliments were raised during the Imbizo and commitments by departments and municipality were made to ensure follow up and address community concerns.

The next Imbizo will be held in Shupingstad on Wednesday, 13 April 2005.
