South African Government statement on the election of Valli Moosa as President of the World Conservation Union
26 November 2004
The South African Government extends its congratulations to Valli Moosa, former Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, as the newly elected President of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) in Bangkok, Thailand on 24 November 2004.
This is indeed an honour for Africa and South Africa especially because the effective use of natural resources in an equitable and ecologically sustainable manner is a matter that is close to the hearts of the South African government and its peoples.
This accolade to South Africa by the world is an affirmation of the growing regard which the international community has and concretely shows for the leadership role South Africa plays in global affairs.
The World Summit on Sustainable Development's Plan of Implementation, which South Africa is a joint custodian and the IUCN share the same vision on the sustainable use of the world's biological diversity and the management of habitats and natural resources.
The Government expresses its confidence that Valli Moosa has both the abilities, expertise and will to discharge his responsibilities in the best interests of the peoples of Africa and the world in general.
