16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM’S POSTCARD PLEDGE CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

16 November 2004

Deputy Minister of Correctional Services Ms Cheryl Gillwald, her Communication counterpart Mr Roy Padayachie, as well as members of the Western Cape provincial Cabinet will officially launch the 16 Days of Activism’s Postcard Pledge Campaign on Wednesday, 17 November 2004.

The launch will take place at the Central Post Office in Athlone, Cape Town.

The Postcard Pledge Campaign is part of the national 16 Days of Activism (25 Nov - 10 Dec) that focuses on increasing awareness of the negative impact of violence against women and children.

The South African Post Office (SAPO) has produced 800 000 postcards for the campaign. Members of the public are encouraged to sign the pledge postcards.

The more postcards signed and returned to the Post Office, the more funds will be raised for organisations that support survivors of woman and child abuse. Transnet will donate R1 for the first 250 000 signed postcards that are received. These donations will be managed by the Foundation for Human Rights.

Members of the public are encouraged to wear a white ribbon during the 16-day period to reflect support for the campaign. The theme for this year’s Campaign is Unite against woman and child abuse.
