MINISTER BALFOUR VISITS JOHANNESBURG CORRECTIONAL CENTRE

Members of the media are invited to attend an Imbizo and Outreach Programme at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre on Monday 27 September 2004, starting at 10:00. Minister Ngconde Balfour and Deputy Minister Cheryl Gillwald will engage members of the community, inmates and correctional officials on issues impacting on the Department of Correctional Services.
The media will also be permitted to accompany the Minister and Deputy Minister on a tour of the prison facilities. This starts at 09:00 and will give the media the opportunity to see conditions of the correctional centres and to be part of the engagement by the Minister and the Deputy Minister with inmates.
Among the issues to be addressed at the Imbizo and Outreach Programme are:
* The setting up of new Correctional Supervision and Parole Boards with community members as Chairpersons
* Establishing Centres of Excellence at Johannesburg, Leeuwkop, Pretoria, Boksburg, Modderbee, Zonderwater, Krugersdorp and Baviaanspoort Correctional Centres
* Plans to address overcrowding in Correctional Centres
* Corrections as a responsibility of society
