CARNIVAL SUMMIT KICKS OFF GAUTENG'S HERITAGE CELEBRATIONS
25 August 2004
The Gauteng Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Department and City of Joburg's Art, Culture and Heritage Service will on Friday, 27 August 2004, kick start the province's Heritage Month celebrations by hosting a Carnival Summit at the MuseumAfrika. The Summit will provide a platform for all performing arts and cultural performers to convene, network, lobby and showcase their talents and skills.
The main purpose of the Carnival Summit is to audit the existing carnival arts and cultural skills currently available in the province. It will further identify other talents or skill shortages required to showcase a world class Carnival event. The Summit will assist the City of Joburg and the Gauteng Provincial Government to create a specific 'Carnival' brand, by working with different regions in the Province. The proposed Carnival brand will ultimately attract thousands of local and international participants to the province.
Resolutions of the Summit will serve to create and develop a unique database of talent available in the province. Spectators are welcome to attend the culmination of a mini carnival with a festival of colour, music and dance at 6:00 pm at the MuseumAfrika later on the day.
A media conference to launch Gauteng's Heritage Month Celebrations will be held during the Summit at the MuseumAfrika as follows:
Date: Friday, 27 August
Time: 10:00
Venue: MuseumAfrika (Newtown Cultural Precinct), Johannesburg
