Statement of the South African National Aids Council
19 June 2004
The South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) held its second quarterly meeting this year today, 19 June 2004, in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The Council received a report on preparations for the upcoming International AIDS Conference in Bangkok and agreed that SANAC would be represented by a delegation as representative as possible of its sectors so that South Africa's fight against HIV and AIDS could be comprehensively presented in this international forum.
The meeting resolved to hold a strategic workshop shortly to chart the way forward for its work in the coming period. There was also agreement that council meetings should be structured to facilitate inputs by sectors on their work.
The council discussed its work as the Country Co-ordinating Mechanism for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS TB and Malaria and agreed on the need to ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of the use of the funds received.
The council expressed its gratitude for the contribution, which Dr Nono Simelela has made to the work of SANAC in building the partnership against HIV and AIDS.
