KwaZulu-Natal Transport, Safety and Security MEC, Bheki Cele, to address community on Crime Awareness Day
26 May 2004
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Safety and Security, Mr Bheki Cele, will address the community of New Ark just outside KwaDukuza (formerly Stanger) in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, 29 May 2004, commencing at 10:00 at Tugela Secondary School Sports Grounds.
The MEC has been invited to speak at a Crime Awareness Day organised by the South African Police Service (SAPS), community policing forum and other stakeholders in the New Ark area. Since the beginning of this year there has been a dramatic rise in levels of crime in the area with police reporting an increase in car hijacking, theft, child rape and domestic violence. Cele has expressed his concerns about the problem given the fact that New Ark is a small community and that it has one of the smallest police stations in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Therefore an increase in crime statistics in this area raises an alarm.
The event will also see members of the SAPS Flying Squad conducting displays aimed at educating women and children on how to protect themselves from criminals as well as other crime education initiatives.
All media are invited to attend. Please note picture opportunities.
