Media alert: KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Safety and Security, B Cele, to host media briefing on taxi conflict

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Safety and Security, Mr Bheki Cele will be hosting a media briefing on Tuesday, 4 May 2004, at 12h00 at the Durban Central Police Station (formerly CR Swart) Officer's Canteen on the ground floor to address the taxi conflicts in the KwaDukuza area, including progress made with the arbitration process which started in December last year.

The press briefing will be preceded by a meeting involving stakeholders from the taxi industry, the Provincial Police Commissioner Hamilton Ngidi, Head of the KZN Department of Transport Dr. Kwazi Mbanjwa, the Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality and the Head of the Department of Transport's Public Transport Enforcement Unit (PTEU).

The issues that will be discussed include how the perpetrators of violence between the Maphumulo Taxi Owners Association and Stanger Taxi Association can be brought to book through better co-ordinated law enforcement initiatives between the SAPS, Department of Transport and local authority enforcement agencies.
