MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE MEETING OF THE MINISTER OF CORRECTIONAL SERVICES WITH MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORP

The Minister of Correctional Services, Mr Ben Skosana, MP, met with members of the Diplomatic Corps in Pretoria this week, to discuss issues of mutual interest.
Mr Skosana and members of the top management of the Department of Correctional Services, briefed the diplomats on the strategic developments within the Department. Discussions also dealt with the issue of foreign nationals in custody in South Africa and South African nationals in custody abroad.
The Department of Correctional Services is presently developing policy guidelines on the issue of prisoner transfer agreements and needed to consult on this matter with members of the Diplomatic Corps.
Several of the representatives expressed appreciation for this initiative by Correctional Services and there was general consensus by the meeting that it is important to develop policy that can serve as standing guidelines once accepted by political principals.
The meeting will be followed up by further bilateral interactions between Correctional Services and diplomatic representatives of the various countries.
