Media Release: Premier Ndaweni Mahlangu hands over Bafazi Zenzeleni Flagship
Programme
2 March 2004
Premier Ndaweni Mahlangu will be delivering a keynote address during a handing over ceremony of the Bafazi Zenzeleni Flagship Programme at Zaaiplaas in the Greater Groblersdal Municipality on Thursday, 4 March 2004. MEC for Social Services, Population and Development, Mr Siphosezwe Masango, and other dignitaries will also attend.
Bafazi Zenzeleni Flagship Programme is one of the three successful Flagship projects in Mpumalanga Province, which were established in 1999 to push back the frontiers of poverty and create opportunities for poor women and children. The main objective of this programme is to facilitate socio-economic, educational, capacity enhancement and opportunities for women and their children in order to break the cycle of vulnerability and reduce their dependency on the state.
This programme now employs 54 women and has enrolled 44 children at the day care centre. As a joint Private Public Partnership (PPP) between ABSA and government, this programme has brought hope and excitement to the people of Zaaaiplaas.
Bafazi Zenzeleni Flagship Programme is focussing on the following key projects to create jobs, namely the Bakery, Sewing, Poultry, Carpentry and Day Care Centre. A mere R306 334 capital injection to the Bakery project has changed lives of the people of this area for the better. This bakery, which is fully functional, has a great potential to expand the frontiers of human fulfilment and sooner rather than later, the cycle of poverty in Zaaiplaas will forever be broken. All flagship programmes are under strict supervision by three Community development officers. The officers are ensuring that the projects are meeting the set goals.
MECs, Councillors, Traditional Leaders, and other important dignitaries are expected at the function.
The Media is invited.
