Media Alert: Minister Moosa to launch Tourist Guide Award in recognition of best practice in the tour guiding sector
10 February 2004

The Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mohammed Valli Moosa, will on Monday, 23 February 2004, launch the annual Tourist Guide Award, a move aimed at recognising best tourism practice in the tour guiding sector and to encourage high quality service among the country's tour guides.

The award will be launched at the newly established The Kingdom estate at Umhlali in KwaZulu-Natal (60 km from Durban) at 17h00 for 17h30. Minister Moosa launched The Kingdom last year, which is dubbed "Three Cultures on One Estate" and showcases the province's diverse and unique heritage.

The award launch will be held just days after the annually celebrated International Tourist Guide Day on 21 February. The categories for the award include:

  • Tourist Guide of the Year
  • Emerging Tourist Guide

All the country's nine provinces short-listed five candidates from each category in order to choose provincial winners. The 18 provincial winners, one from each category, will be announced at the launch, with the overall winner to be announced on World Tourism Day on 27 September 2004.

All members of the media are invited to the ceremony. To confirm attendance, please contact Ministerial Spokesperson, Phindile Makwakwa, at 082 850 9559.
