Minister Ngubane to launch the National Research and Development (R&D) Survey 2001/2
13 January 2004
The Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, Dr Ben Ngubane, will formally launch the National Research and Development (R&D) Survey 2001/2 on Thursday, 15 January 2004, at Rainforest Room in Parliament, Cape Town.
In 2002, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) commissioned the Knowledge Management Group of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) to carry out the biennial national survey of financial and human resource inputs into research and development (R&D). This was done after Cabinet's approval of the National R&D Strategy that aims to double government investment in science and technology by 2005 and achieve a national R&D expenditure target of at least 1% of GDP by 2005. The survey will provide amongst other things, expenditure during 2001/2 financial years. The 2001/2 Survey was carried out in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Frascati Manual, and in consultation with national and international experts.
Minister Ngubane, supported by the Director-General of the DST, Dr Rob Adam, and the Executive Director of HSRC, Prof Michael Kahn, will launch the National R&D Survey 2001/2.
