MEC PADAYACHEE LAUNCHES READATHON WEEK

The MEC for Mpumalanga Education, Mr Craig Padayachee, will on 1 September 2003 launch the Readathon Week that starts on 1 - 5 September in Emalahleni Municipality at Ogies in Mehlwana Secondary School.

The launch of Readathon Week will be marked by a donation of books with various titles from an organisation called Scholastic.

Readathon is a campaign that focuses public attention on the need to develop a culture of reading in South Africa. It is also aimed at raising the consciousness of all South Africans about the importance of working together to ensure a literate, informed and well read society.

Readathon is about encouraging the public to read consistently. The common feature of the host of reading-related activities that make up the Redathon is that they are exciting and enjoyable. As such it stresses that reading is the key to a life of hope and opportunities.
