The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi, has appointed an interdepartmental task team to review the South African public holiday calendar. The appointment of the task team follows numerous concerns from different sectors regarding public holidays.
The task team is chaired by Advocate Rufus Malatji, Head of the Legal Services at the Department of Home Affairs and it consists of the following departments: Home Affairs, National Treasury, Labour, Education and Environmental Affairs and Tourism. It will investigate amongst others:

* If we have too many or too few public holidays in South Africa than is necessary
* The rationale and the extent to which we must add or reduce the current public holidays in South Africa
* Whether holidays falling on weekends should be celebrated on either Friday or Monday and the implications thereof
* The question of mid-week holidays and their impact on the economy of the countr
* Whether certain additional cultural, political and religious days should be declared public holidays.
The task team is calling upon all South Africans to make submissions on the review of public holidays in South Africa. The deadline for submissions is 31 January 2004.
All submissions can be sent to: Advocate Rufus Malatji
