BUDGET TO TACKLE GAUTENG SOCIAL SERVICE CHALLENGES

Gauteng Social Services and Population Development MEC, Angie Motshekga, will table her department's budget in the Gauteng Legislature tomorrow, June 2.

The budget, estimated at R4, 5-billion, will be directed towards the:

* Increase in Social Grants
* Increase in the allocations to combat the abuse of drugs and alcohol
* Rolling out of food parcels programme in the province
* Increase in the allocation for the care and support of children, youth. Elderly and person with disabilities
* An announcement will possibly be made on how to support child-headed families and children in distress

The MEC is expected to announce tough measures that will deal with the alleged misuse of child support grant as well as people who fraudulently apply for disability grant.

She is also expected to announce a R250-million government grant to the non-governmental sector.
