MPUMALANGA EXECUTIVE COUNCIL'S DECISIONS AT GREATER MIDDELBURG MUNICIPALITY

The Mpumalanga Provincial Executive Council has approved the following during its sitting today, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 -

1. That Ms. Pontsho Mabelane should lead a delegation comprised of two departmental officials, fifteen cultural dancers and three adults from Balfour to the People's Republic of China in order to participate in the Shanghai International Children's Cultural and Art festival taking place from the 21st to the 31st July 2003. This visit will also enhance the International co-operation for discussions between Mpumalanga Province and Sichuan Province and Chongqing municipality, which will seek to develop a plan of action emanating from the MOU that was signed.

The Executive Council invites all the people of Mpumalanga Province to come out in throngs to interact with leaders of government, as they shall be interacting with various communities and members of the public in dialogue during this Imbizo Focus Week, which started on the 31st March and will end on the 5th April 2003. In attendance will be National Ministers, Premier, Members of the Executive Council and Councillors.

SERVICE DELIVERY.

Government has invested a total of R 34 459 206 in various projects in this municipality:

1. An amount of R 7 200 000 has been spent to construct 450 housing units at Middleburg Ext 18. This project was completed in April 2002.

2. Government is spending R 2 423 254 in the following projects in various schools within this municipality:

The construction of 12 toilets at Poolze Community School (Stoffberg) at a cost of R 553 244 and the construction of 6 toilets at Ongesies Primary School (Middelburg) at a cost of R 258 726.

These projects were started in October 2002 and will possibly be completed during the course of this year 2003.

Renovations at Mphanama Primary School, Ndzundza Primary School and Platfontein Primary School at a total cost of R 1 611 284. These renovations were started in October 2002 and completed in February 2003.

3. Government is spending R 22 830 000 in the following road projects:

* Reconstruction of Bethal to Hendrina road at a cost of R 16 440 000.
* Resealing of Middelburg to Groblesdal road at a cost of R 2 740 000.
* Resealing of Middelburg to Vandyksdrif at a cost of R 3 650 000.

All these projects were completed during the course of 2002.

4. An amount of R 489 732 has been spent on the upgrading of the bulk water supply system at Kwazamokuhle (Middelburg). This project was started in July 2000 and completed early 2002.

5. Government is spending a total amount of R 723 952 to subsidies the following poverty alleviation projects in this municipality:

* Vukunethemba Home based care at a cost of R 175 000. This money will be disbursed to the project over a period of three years.
* Something Out of Nothing handwork production project to the tune of R 350 000
* Ike Mukuse Pre-School at a cost of R 82 864, this money caters for 60 children at this school.
* Ikholwa Khwezi Creche, which caters for 50 children and the Uthando Creche, which caters for 45 children. These projects receive R 61 440 and R 54 648 respectively.

6. Government is also feeding 10 253 learners through the Primary School Nutrition Intervention Programme to the tune of
R 782, 268. This program seeks to provide poor children with at least one healthy meal per day. It is implemented at 64 schools and employs 72 women.
