PREMIER OF KWAZULU-NATAL, LPHM MTSHALI, TO LAUNCH THE PROVINCIAL ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN FOR SGBS ELECTIONS

The 2003 elections of office bearers for the School Governing Body members (SGBs) to assist in the governance of about 6 000 learning institutions in KwaZulu-Natal will be held in May until the end of September this year.

The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal and Acting Minister of Education and Culture, Dr LPHM Mtshali, will officially Launch the Provincial Advocacy Campaign for SGBs election at Masibumbane High School, Ulundi, tomorrow, Thursday, April 3, starting at 09h30.

The objective of the official launch, among other things, is to publicise the Management Plan, which has been prepared by the School Governance Unit, to Senior Management of the Department. It is hoped the launch will ultimately bring the desired outcome, that of having legally constituted Governing Bodies in our public schools handling issues of governance.

According to the South African Schools Act No. 84 of 1996 the term of office for SGBs may not exceed three years, and as a result the majority of Governing Bodies of our public schools will be conducting their elections this year.

Dignitaries expected to grace this important event, include the Chief Executive Officer, Professor CRM Dlamini, Senior officials of the Department, including Chief Directors, Regional Directors, Directors, District Managers, SEMs and other stakeholders in education.
