BORDER SECURITY UNDER FOCUS

The provincial Imbizo Focus Week will be in full swing on Thursday, 3 April 2003, at the Lebombo border post in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga.

Mpumalanga Safety and Security MEC, Thabang Makwetla, as chairperson of the provincial criminal justice cluster, will be participating in the activities planned for the day with the communities adjacent to the border gate.

Amongst other confirmed guests will be the National Minister of Home Affairs, the Hon. Dr M Buthelezi, the local mayor, Dr S Khumalo, traditional leadership of the Ngomane clan, Taxi Associations and representatives of SARS.

The main theme for the day will be: "THE TIDE HAS TURNED, BUILDING A PEOPLE'S CONTRACT FOR A SAFER MPUMALANGA"

The MEC and the Minister will be listening to the concerns of the local community on issues relating to border security, particularly cross border crime that include drugs and vehicle smuggling, stock theft, corruption and illegal immigration.

The Lebombo border post is one of the busiest gates servicing citizens travelling from Mozambique to South Africa on a daily basis. An average of five thousand (5000) people and three hundred (300) motor vehicles pass through the post on a daily basis.
