STATEMENT ON MEETING OF BURUNDI CEASE-FIRE SIGNATORIES IN PRETORIA
Deputy President Jacob Zuma will tonight, 21 November 2002, host a meeting between President Pierre Buyoya of Burundi and the other two signatories of the Burundi Cease-fire Agreement, in Pretoria.
The purpose of the meeting is for the three signatories to discuss the implementation of the cease-fire agreement they signed on 7 October 2002, at the Great Lakes Heads of States Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
President Buyoya, representing the Transitional Government of Burundi, signed the cease-fire agreement with Colonel Jean Bosco Ndayikengurukiye of the National Council for the Defence of Democracy-Forces for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) and Dr Alain Mugabarabona of the Palipehutu-Forces for National Liberation, (Palipehutu-FNL).
The three signatories held their first meeting since the signing ceremony in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 6 November, and decided to meet in Pretoria to take discussions further.
Some of the issues to be discussed include preparing for the return of combatants and members of the CNDD-FDD (Ndayikengurukiye) and Palipehutu-FNL (Mugabarabona) to Burundi.
A cease-fire agreement between the Transitional Government of Burundi and the CNDD-FDD of Pierre Nkurunziza has still not been finalised.
