MINISTER TO LAUNCH HOUSE TO HOUSE CAMPAIGN TO REGISTER CHILDREN AS PART OF IMBIZO FOCUS WEEK.
The Minister of Social Development, Dr Zola Skweyiya, will today at 13:30 join Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa, MEC Angie Motshega and scores of public servants to lead a house-to-house campaign to register children for grants in Eldorado Park, which will mark the beginning of Imbizo Focus Week
The campaign will also involve thousands of volunteer from youth and women's organisations and public servants who will visit every house in Eldorado Park to register children who qualify for grants.
"We are on course as over two million children have been registered and now receive their grants. We must keep the momentum so that every child who is entitled does indeed get his/her grant. This is a constitutional imperative and is a very critical part of our poverty alleviation programme. We therefore urge every South African to take part."
The children who will be registered are children with disabilities who qualify for the Care Dependency Grant, children who are orphans and qualify for Foster Care Grant as well as those under seven who qualify for the Child Support Grant.
This campaign is part of Social Development Month held under theme " Lend a Hand to Protect Children's Rights."
The government has set the target of registering 3 million more children for grants by the year 2005 and no less than one million by the end of March 2003.
