SAFETY AND SECURITY FOCUS MONTH IN MPUMALANGA

Mpumalanga has so far registered 310 volunteers who have listed with various police stations throughout the province since the Provincial Launch of Safety and Security Focus Month on 1 February 2002 at Breyten, near Ermelo. The launch was attended by among others the Minister of Justice, Penuell Maduna, Premier Ndaweni Mahlangu and the MEC for Safety and Security, Thabang Makwetla

Premier Ndaweni Mahlangu and Safety and Security MEC Thabang Makwetla visited Kanyamazane Police Station on Wednesday, 6 February 2002, where about 35 volunteers were listed as reservists. Those who were listed in Kanyamazane are already undergoing training that will equip them with data capturing and telephone etiquette to enable them to help at the community centre.

Volunteers are listed at various police stations throughout the province. They will assist under the direction of a community policing forum.

Each and every one of the volunteers will assist according to their area of expertise, skills and talents.

Mobilisation of volunteers is part of f the bigger Letsema campaign announced by President Thabo Mbeki where communities are called upon to work for peace and stability and reclaim our streets, parks and community centres from criminals.

The Department of Safety and Security will continue with various themes during the next three weeks and the details of the programme and various activities will be communicated in the due course.

The following are the themes as set by the National Department of Safety and Security:

* Week 1: Mobilisation of the community (organisation, orientation and training of the volunteers
* Week2: Joint operations, roadblocks, search and cordons
* Week 3: Intelligence, photos of wanted suspects
* Week 4: Sector policing.
