MEC CRAIG PADAYACHEE ESTABLISHES ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE

Following the reflection of a general below par performance of the Mpumalanga Grade 12 learners in their 2001 examinations, the MEC for Education, Mr Craig Padayachee, is instituting a series of drastic measurers to ensure an improved performance at the end of 2002.

He has announced an Assessment Committee consisting of 9 persons drawn from the three teacher unions, student formations, school governing bodies and Higher Institutions of learning operative in the Province. The department is also represented.

The purpose of the establishment of this team is to undertake a painstaking analysis of this year's matric results. This will be done subject by subject, school by school, programme by programme and all other relevant matters undertaken prior the results.

According to the MEC, subject committees and a team consisting of representatives from the Institution of Higher learning who were an integral part of the Malaga Summit of July 2000 will form the support team.

The Committee, according to Mr Padayachee, will commence its work in earnest by next week in preparation for an Indaba of principal stakeholders to be convened before the end of January 2002. The Premier, Mr NJ Mahlangu, will open this Indaba.

Additional to the analysis task, the committee is expected to develop relevant programmes to augment and improve on the present strategy. This will ensure that schools take a serious charge and redefine their core business. This accountability also extends to those responsible for the efficacy of the programmes designed for the betterment of teaching and learning, more especially at Grade 12 in 2001.

Parallel to these operations, the MEC and the Head of Department will convene a meeting with all circuit managers by 11 January 2002 to discuss and plan the effective monitoring of teaching and learning in all school grades, and particularly in Grade 12. (END).

For inquiries, contact Peter Maminza at 082 445 3791.

Issued by the Office of the MEC for Education, Mpumalanga, 28 December 2001
