The whole world has been through a momentous and, in many ways, exceptionally trying year.

Against this background, our resolve as a nation to win the battle for peace, tolerance, democracy and a better life for all remains as strong as ever. In all walks of life we have seen evidence of our citizens' steadfastness in this great cause; and, as a nation, we have been able to see notable successes.

In this spirit, and in warm appreciation, I extend to all our people my very best wishes for a happy festive season and New Year.
