FESTIVE MESSAGE BY ADV NGOAKO RAMATLHODI, PREMIER OF THE NORTHERN PROVINCE, 7 December 2001

The festive season is upon us. It is a period of family, friendship and peace around the world. The Muslim community has already begun observing the month of Ramadhan; the spirit of Christmas is being felt by all and sundry. May the blessings of this season be upon you.

You will no doubt be aware of the increased traffic on our roads. Let us all ensure that we do "Arrive Alive"! I would like to urge all road users, drivers and pedestrians, to observe the basic rules of road safety. It is important that we make concerted efforts to reduce road accidents over this period.

Normally we have increased need for blood during this period. Our hospitals are already experiencing acute shortage of blood. Let us assist those whose lives depend on blood transfusion by donating blood in large numbers.

We will also celebrate our national Day of Reconciliation (16 December) over this period. May we seize the opportunity provided by the festive spirit to reconcile as communities so that we may live in peace. In celebrating the Day of Reconciliation, we must appreciate the decline in incidences of racism in our province and recommit ourselves to the eradication of any form of discrimination and racial intolerance. We must also intensify our vigilance against the abuse of women and children. Our communities shall never be at peace if women and children are not safe.

Let us also take this opportunity to remember those who have passed on due to HIV/AIDS. In the memory of their lives, let us abstain from sex- particularly the youth, be faithful to our partners, and practice safe sex. Those already infected should not be discriminated against. It is our duty to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS and to care for those who are infected. Let us care for one another.

"I CARE, DO YOU?

Issued by: Office of the Premier, Northern Province, 7 December 2001
