MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI ON EID-UL-FITR 2001
It is a privilege and pleasure to convey on behalf of all South Africans good wishes to Muslims on the joyous occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr at the conclusion of Ramadhan. Fasting in the month of Ramadhan is one of the five pillars of Islam.
Throughout this holy month, you have physically endured the pangs of hunger to emerge spiritually rejuvenated. The fast is undertaken to exercise discipline, self-restraint, generosity and to empathise with the poor and destitute. The qualities you have worked so hard to mould must find expression in your actions in the community and in South Africa.
Throughout our freedom struggle, many Muslims fought for peace and justice for the oppressed. Some spoke out against the unnatural system of apartheid, others gave their lives in acting against it.
In the dawn of our freedom, Muslims must now join others to rejuvenate our entire society. The Muslim community has a vital role to play in the moral regeneration of this society, which has been battered and divided by apartheid. Like other communities, the Muslim community also has a role to play in forging unity towards a peaceful, just and prosperous society.
May you enjoy the day with your loved ones and may this Eid-ul-Fitr (recurring happiness) help strengthen our resolve as South Africans to fight poverty and underdevelopment in our country and our continent.
