THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ICD, ADV KAREN MCKENZIE, TO VISIT THE UMGUNGUNDLOVU COMMUNITY DURING THE IMBIZO FOCUS WEEK IN THE EASTERN CAPE PROVINCE, 9 November 2001

The Executive Director of the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD), Adv Karen McKenzie, will be visiting the Umgungundlovu community during the Imbizo Focus Week in the Eastern Cape Province on Friday, 9 November 2001.

Adv McKenzie will proceed to the Muldersdrift community in the Gauteng Province, which is predominantly a farming area on Saturday, 10 November 2001, and her final visit will be to the Bantoane Tribe (Dennilton) in the Mpumalanga Province on Sunday, 11 November 2001.

Among complaints received from the Umgungundlovu community are complaints relating to service delivery and there are allegations that a police officer raped a community member incident and no action was instituted against the said officer. In Muldersdrift the community is experiencing problems in that police seem to be reluctant to attend to their complaints against farmers in that area. With the Bantoane tribe, there are allegations that domestic violence cases reported to police are referred back to the Bantoane Tribal Authority.

The Executive Director will lead the ICD delegation with the intention of interacting, listening and registering complaints from members of the community alleging possible police misconduct and criminality. It must be mentioned that the ICD is not on a witch-hunt against police, since the delegation will also record any police commendations from members of the said communities. These visits will bring into prominence our involvement and commitment to Government's Imbizo Focus Week (5 - 11 November 2001).
